MP rejects uranium enrichment freeze

TEHRAN (Press TV) -- Iranian MP Alireza Zakani has said that the Islamic Republic would never accept any suspension in its uranium enrichment program.

“Any package aiming to slap a freeze on uranium enrichment, even for a short period, would present an obstacle to Iran’s development. If Iran accepts suspension of its current activities, it will have to pay a heavy cost to resume its nuclear program in the future,” the Mehr News Agency quoted the MP as saying.
On Saturday, the EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana handed a package of incentives drawn up by the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany (5+1 Group) to the Iranian Foreign Minister, Manuchehr Mottaki. The package offers Iran a set of economic and trade incentives in exchange for the country’s suspension of its uranium enrichment activities.
Despite positive reports by the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammad ElBaradei, the U.S. and certain Western countries claim that Iran’s nuclear program pursues a military goal. Tehran has repeatedly announced that its peaceful nuclear program is solely for industrial and medical applications as well as power generation to meet the country’s growing need for electricity.
The Western package comes in the wake of a package submitted by Iran to a number of countries and international organizations to tackle a range of issues the world is facing in connection with terrorism, nuclear proliferation, drug trafficking and other criminal activities that threaten peace and security across the world.
“If Iran accepts the West’s proposed package, which calls for suspension of uranium enrichment, it would amount to bowing to the illegal demands of the arrogant countries,” Zakani stated.
The MP added that the arrogant powers make every effort to block Iran’s access to nuclear energy because they regard themselves as the exclusive owners of the technology.
